What is a salt lamp?

Guess: a mineral object, a soft light, a wood base… Yes, the salt lamp! It is a block of rock salt hollowed out to hold a bulb (often E27 socket), transformed into a table lamp or desk lamp ideal for the bedroom as well as the living room. Sourced from Himalayan salt, these lamps emit a warm, calming orange glow, perfect as a nightstand lamp or night light. You can adjust the brightness with a switch (and sometimes a dimmer), then you turn on or off according to the desired atmosphere.

Origin and history of salt lamps

Most salt lamps come from the Khewra mines (Pakistan), at the foot of the Himalayas. The pink Himalayan salt has been extracted there for centuries. Handcrafted, these salt stones with translucent salt crystals are appreciated for their raw appearance (salt crystal in its natural shape) and their decorative look in our modern interiors.

What are the different models of salt lamps?

  • Natural Himalayan salt lamp: raw, round, “treasure” shape or made of assembled crystals.
  • Colored lamp: white, blue, or orange to vary the luminous atmosphere.
  • Decorative lamp: zen, feng shui, flower of life, original, vintage.
  • Functional: essential oil diffuser, task lamp, “nightstand” model for nightstands.
  • Price: from an affordable little lamp to a high-end model with LED bulbs and dimmer.

Why choose a salt lamp?

  • Create an atmosphere: a calming and warm light for the ambient air in every room.
  • Natural object: salt crystal offers a unique mineral aesthetic.
  • Gift idea: a design lamp easy to install and place.
Note: It is sometimes stated that these lamps “purify the air” through “negative ions.” As it stands, no robust scientific evidence supports health benefits. Use them primarily as decorative and relaxing lighting.

FAQ about salt lamps

Does a salt lamp really purify the air?

Not proven. Some descriptions mention “negative ions,” but there is no scientific consensus. Consider it a decorative light fixture.

Is it dangerous to leave a salt lamp on all night?

Choose a low consumption LED bulb, respect the recommended wattage, avoid covering the lampshade, and place it on a stable surface. As with any lighting, turning off is advised in case of prolonged absence.

What size to choose for a bedroom or living room?

Small spaces (nightstand, office): mini-lamp. Bedroom / reading corner: 4.4–8.8 lbs. Living room: 11 lbs and up for a stronger light intensity. Adjust according to the surface and desired ambiance.

How to maintain a lamp that "sweats" with humidity?

It's normal: salt absorbs moisture. Place the lamp away from very humid rooms, turn it on regularly, wipe gently, and protect the wood base.
